Abstract

Temulawak can be used to produce essential oils to be extracted. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of microwave power and extraction time on color, refractive index, components of temulawak essential oil using microwave hydrodistillation. Small size rhizome was extracted using aquadest as solvent. The first variable was using microwave power of 300, 450, and 600 Watt. The second variable was extraction times used in this study were 45, 90, 135, and 180 minutes. Extraction conditions were using a feed to solvent ratio of 2:1 (volume/weight) at ± 100 oC 1 atm. The results showed that the microwave power and extraction time did not have a significant effect on the color  and the refractive index, but had a significant effect on the components of essential oil. The color of the temulawak essential oil is in accordance with the SNI for essential oils, which is range from light yellow to brownish yellow. The best value of refractive index was obtained at extraction with microwave power of 600 Watt and extraction time of 180 minutes of 1.35093. The highest camphor resulted in extraction with a power of 450 Watt and extraction time of 135 minutes at 35.12%.
