Abstract

Barium sulfate crystals are a very common case in the oil and gas industry. The presence of these crystals affects the production of oil and gas, causing technical problems, namely it can inhibit the flow rate, so that the pressure in the pipe will be higher and cause the pipe to break and be damaged. The re-sults of this study present the formation of barium sulfate (BaSO4) crystals with the batch crystalliser method under the influence of the stirring rotation speed (0 rpm, 120 rpm, 240 rpm, 360 rpm, 480 rpm) and the concentration of additives (0 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm). , 15 ppm, 20 ppm) with a constant temperature of 500C. In this study, the BaSO4 crystallization experiment in a glass beaker using a magnetic stirrer with a stirring rotation speed was added to react BaCL2 and Na2SO4. The results showed that the addi-tion of strontium chloride and ferrum chloride additives was able to reduce the mass of crystals formed. The higher the stirring rotation speed added, the more crystals formed. SEM analysis showed that the crystal morphology of BaSO4 was shaped like a star which indicated that this crystal shape was a charac-teristic of barite crystals. While the results of XRD analysis confirmed that barium sulfate (barite) crystals, this proves that the crust formed is barite crystals as solid crust.
