Abstract

Hydroxyapatite is a calcium phosphate compound that can be used as a biomaterial to replace human bones and teeth because it is biocompatible, bioactive and non-toxic. Hydroxyapatite can be synthesized by reacting a CaO from red mussel shell and phosphoric acid using.precipitation process. This study intend to find out the sintering temperature and pH effect on the quality of the hydroxyapatite product. First step was calcined the shell of red mussel with furnace at 9000Celcius to make CaO at the solid phase. CaO then produce then filtered, the filtrate is added with NaOH solution to give pH 9,10,11,12, and 13. Then, the hydroxyapatite product and filtrate are separated.with filtration process. The hydroxyapatite precipitate then sintered with a furncae at 500,600,700,800, 9000C of temperature. and analyzed by using XRF, XRD and SEM. The results showed that the hydroxyapatite with pH of 12 and a sintering temperature of 8000C condition was the optimum quality with a 96.84% crystall quality (crystallinity) and 1.93 Ca/P ratio.
