Abstract

The shell of the rice snail (Pila ampullacea) can be a waste for the environment because it cannot be processed and utilized further, but can be extracted so that it can be used as a coagulant. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the extract derived from rice field snail shells as a coagulant through the coagulation- flocculation water treatment process and to determine the significant differences in each test parameter. Making extracts from rice field snail shells with a size of 40 mesh through a deproteination process using 3% NaOH, a demineralization process using 1 N HCl and a deacetylation process using 50% NaOH. This study is an experimental study using variations in coagulant doses, namely 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg/L. From the research that has been carried out, it can be concluded that the natural coagulant of rice snail shells and synthetic coagulant PAC there is a significant difference in reducing the TSS percentage, the synthetic coagulant PAC gives more effective results, namely 64-88% while the coagulant of rice field snail shells is 58-79%. The decrease in the turbidity percentage of the coagulant of rice field snail shells was 83-96.42%, while the PAC synthesis coagulant was 85-99%. At the acidity (pH) coagulant of rice field snail shells 7.2-7.9 while the pH of coagulant synthesis PAC was 6.8-7.5, both were still in the range of 6-9.
