Abstract

The problem of heavy metal pollution in the environment is perilous. One of the solution to reduce heavy metal in industrial waste is to use adsorbents from chitosanof kupang putih shell. The aim of this reserach is to determine the optimum condition of the chitosan’s, from kupang putih shell, ability to bind copper which involves the mass of the adsorbent and the contact period between the chitosan and the copper during adsorption and to learn the adsorption capacity of the chitosanfrom kupang putih shell towards copper. This reseach incorporates the chitosan’s variable mass of 0.7, 1,1.3,1.6, and 1.9 (gram) and the adsorption period of 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 (minutes). The stages of this research are material preparation, chitin isolation from the shell of kupang putih, deacetylation of chitin into chitosan, fabrication of solution samples contaminated with Cu, and the adsorption of Cu in CuSO4 solution by the chitosan from the shell of kupang putih. This chitosan adsorbent has the surface area of 770,960 m2 /g and could properly adsorb Cu up to 99,41794% at the 100 minutes contact period using adsorbent from chitosan as much as 1 gram.
