Abstract

Water hyacinth and eggshells can be used as alternative energy. The high cellulose content in water hyacinth has the potential to be used as raw material of biobriquettes. The addition of eggshells which have lime compounds (CaCO3) is proven to reduce the water content so that it can increase the calorific value. Lignin was chosen as an adhesive because lignin has a high calorific value. This research was conducted to determine the effect of the composition of water hyacinth and egg shell with lignin adhesive on the calorific value and water content. The manufacture of biobriquettes is carried out in several stages, namely the preparation of materials, carbonization, grinding, mixing, and molding. The variables used were the composition of water hyacinth:eggshell in a ratio (90:10); (85:15); (80:20); (75:25); (70:30) and adhesive concentration (10%; 15%; 20%; 25%; 30%). The results showed that the lignin and eggshell adhesives had a significant effect on the calorific value and moisture content, where the resulting calorific value increased with the addition of lignin adhesive and the water content decreased with the addition of eggshells to biobriquettes. The calorific value is relatively good at 5293.67 cal/g and the water content is relatively good at 0.114%.
