Abstract

ORANGUTAN CONSERVATION CENTER IN BUKIT LAWANG, LANGKAT REGENCY WITH ECOLOGICAL ARCHITECTURE APPROACH Farhan Dirgantara 18051010087 ABSTRACT Indonesia is an archipelago country with abundant natural resources, including flora and fauna. This diversity should be treated so as not to become extinct, however, Indonesia's flora and fauna are currently experiencing a decline, one of which is the Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii). One of the causes of the decline in the Orangutan population is the rampant illegal hunting by the community. This factor indicates that a treatment is needed so that the Orangutan population can grow while at the same time educating the public to participate in protecting the Orangutans. Sumatran orangutans live in the Gunung Lesuer National Park (TNGL), one of which is Bukit Lawang. Bukit Lawang itself is a National Tourism Development Area (KPPN) which is oriented towards Orangutans. However, visits to KPPN Bukit Lawang are still very low. In the last 5 years, if it is averaged per month KPPN Bukit Lawang has 1,035 tourists. This factor indicates that a tourism development is needed to attract visitors. The purpose of this design later is to create a conservation area to preserve and research confiscated Orangutans, as well as to educate the public on the importance of protecting Orangutans. And it is hoped that the Orangutan Conservation Center will be able to increase tourist attraction to Bukit Lawang. The theme used is “Home is Nature Itself” which means that the home for Orangutans is nature itself. Where, this theme has the meaning that all this time nature has always been converted into plantation land and settlements, and has caused Orangutans to be homeless and their population to decline. Thus, this theme emphasizes that the original home of the Orangutan is in nature itself. So, even though this conservation will be situ, it is still necessary to pay attention to how the orangutans feel comfortable. The concept that is emphasized is how to create a forest atmosphere like the natural habitat of animals by maintaining the existing site and adapting to the needs of Orangutans through Ecological Architecture approaches and methods, in order to create harmony between humans, nature and Orangutans by focusing on the habits and lifestyle of the Orangutans.
