Abstract

Corrosion is material damage from chemical reactions between metals and their environment. Corrosion events are often found and cause losses to the industrial sector and the country's economic decline. The impact due to corrosion is quite large, including additional costs of production, maintenance, repairs to decreased efficiency of equipment which results in cost overruns and a decrease in foreign exchange. Corrosion prevention can be done by adding a corrosion inhibitor. Proper corrosion control can reduce losses due to corrosion. This study aims to find the best concentration of sodium nitrite inhibitor in controlling the corrosion rate of stainless steel types 201, 304 and 316L in an environment of 3.5% NaCl. This research was conducted using the potentiostat polarization method with variations in the concentration of sodium nitrite solution of 300 ppm, 400 ppm, 500 ppm, 600 ppm and 700 ppm. In this study, the best results were obtained with the addition of sodium nitrite concentration of 500 ppm giving the corrosion rate in SS 201 of 0,0854 mpy with inhibitor efficiency of 57,4770%, in SS 304 the corrosion rate of 0,0470 mpy with inhibitor efficiency of 68,1758%, and in SS 316L corrosion rate of 0,0046 mpy with inhibitor efficiency of 81,3854%.
