Abstract

Snail shell waste is a waste of processed food waste that has a composition in the form of calcium, protein, coarse fiber and phosphorus. With a high calcium content of about 99.10% then snail shell waste has the potential to be used as a biomaterials. One biomaterials that can be synthesized from snail shells is calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2), of which calcium phosphate is the main constituent component of human bones. Calcium phosphate is synthesized by precipitation using several precursors of phosphate namely Na2HPO4, K2HPO4, and (NH4)2HPO4. The resulting calcium phosphate is characterized by XRD, SEM and FTIR to determine the influence of the differences in precursors used. The results of the characteristic test showed that the crystal composition of calcium phosphate produced differently where the dominant Na2HPO4 precursor produces Chlorapatite and the dominant precursor K2HPO4 produces Chloro-Fluorapatite with orthoclase-shaped particles without pores on the surface. Meanwhile, with the precursor (NH4) 2HPO4, calcium phosphate is produced which dominantly forms Carbonate Apatite (Type A) with particles in the form of augite without pores on the surface and is more amorphous. These results are supported by FTIR test results, where with the precursor Na2HPO4 and K2HPO4 there are bands at a wavelength of 600-700 cm-1 for chlorine bonds and 700-800 cm-1 for fluorine bonds. So from the results of the characteristics that have been done, it is concluded that the precursors affect the formed calcium phosphate.
