Abstract

Biodiesel is an important commodity with high market demand, which is produced through transesterification reactions, biodiesel synthesis involving a catalyst. The catalyst that is often used in the synthesis of biodiesel is a homogeneous catalyst, but this catalyst has many drawbacks due to the difficulty of separating the catalyst from the product. An alternative to homogeneous catalysts is heterogeneous catalysts, this type of catalyst is easy to separate from the product. CaO (Calcium Oxide) is a strong base that has high catalytic activity so that it can be used as a heterogeneous catalyst for biodiesel. Kupang shells have a high CaCO3 content, this allows them to be used as heterogeneous catalysts. The catalyst was made by crushing the shells of mussels and then calcined to release CO2 to produce CaO. The variables used are the size of the catalyst, namely 30 Mesh, 40 Mesh, 60 Mesh, 80 Mesh, 100 Mesh, and the activation temperature is 500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, 800 °C, 900 °C. Each catalyst used in the biodiesel transesterification reaction, the yield, density and viscosity of the biodiesel produced were calculated. In addition, the catalyst was tested by BET to determine the surface area of the catalyst. The results showed that the catalyst with an activation temperature of 900°C and a size of 100 Mesh could produce a yield of 74.9157%, the density and viscosity in accordance with SNI Biodiesel 7128:2015, namely 0.84175 gr/ml and 4.1533 Cst.
