Abstract

The increase of plastic production in worldwide has create serious environmental problems. Because plastic is difficult to decompose in nature. Edible film is alternative packaging which can decompose naturally. One of the materials used to make edible films is starch. This research aims to determine the composition of corncob starch and plasticizer which can produce the best properties of the edible film. The corncob starch and the plasticizers are glycerol and sorbitol used to make edible film. Edible film in this research made by casting method with dispersing the raw material, heating the mixture, printing the edible film and drying the edible film. This research conducted with variations of corncob, which 5, 6 and 7 in grams and variations of glycerol: sorbitol plasticizer with ratio = 2: 8; 3: 7; 5: 5; 7: 3; 8: 2 in milliliters. The test showed that the more starch made the increase of film thickness and tensile strength, but the elongation and water vapor permeability decreased. The results showed that best edible film obtained at a glycerol-sorbitol composition ratio 5:5 with the amount of 7 grams of corncob starch.
