Abstract

The fibre of Loofah (gambas) contains cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The contain of cellulose in the fibre of loofah can be made into sodium caroxymethylcellulose. Indonesia right now still import to supply the need of Sodium carboxymetthylcellulose to used in some sector of industry. The purpose o this research is to known the effect of NaOH concentration and the addition of trichloroacetic acid toward sodium level of the carboxymethylcellulose. The methods of this experiment is divided into three steps namely; process of pretreatment, process of alakalinization and the process of carboxymethylation. Process of pre-treatment usesdelignification process with solution 17,5% NaOH at the tempreetaure 108ºC for 60 minutes and goes on with the bleaching using solution 2% H2O2 at the temperature 100ºC for 90 minutes. Process of alkalinization is done by reacting α-selulosa with Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and makes the reacor suited with variable, NaOH concentration. Carboxymethylation is done after alkalinization by reacting trichloroacetic acid with termined variable. The next step is washing Sodium carboxymethylcellulose with etanol and aquadest. The quality of Sodiumcarboxymethylcellulose which is resulted in the test level with NaCl test and FTIR isin order to see a group of carboxyl (-COO) which is subtituted. A cellulose result of fibre of Loofah after pre-treatment process is asmuch as90,2719% and the best result of Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is obtained 35% NaOH with addition of 7 grams trichloroacetic acid which obatins the Carboxymehtylcellulose level by 74,16%. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR )shows that there is a group of substituted carboxyl.
