Abstract

The energy crisis due to the depletion of petroleum reserves encourages people to innovate to create alternative energy sources such as biodiesel. One way to provide biodiesel is by utilizing the results of in situ transesterification of papaya seeds with rice husk zeolite as a catalyst. The oil content in papaya seeds is relatively large and does not compete with food needs so that it can be developed into alternative fuels. In industry, reaction kinetics data is necessary for information in reactor design and process optimization. Reaction kinetics is the study of reaction rates and reaction mechanisms, which refers to the determination of the order of the reaction and the reaction rate constant of the specified material. The purpose of this study was to determine the order of the reaction for making biodiesel from papaya seeds with an in situ transesterification process with a zeolite catalyst from rice husks. The process of synthesizing zeolite from rice husk ash was carried out by mixing sodium silicate and sodium aluminate with a volume ratio of 1:1 and stirring at room temperature for 2 hours. The solution was heated at 100oC in a tightly closed state, filtered and washed the precipitate using distilled water and dried for 2 hours. Biodiesel was obtained by in situ transesterification process of papaya seeds using methanol and zeolite catalyst with temperature variations used were 45oC, 50oC, 55oC, 60oC, 65oC and the time used was 40 minutes, 60, minutes, 80 minutes, 100 minutes, and 120 minutes. The purification process was carried out by washing using distilled water at a temperature of 40oC. From the XRD test results, it was found that there were two components contained in the synthesized zeolite which included Sodium tecto-alumosilicate hydrate, Zeolite Y, (Na) in cubic crystal form and Zeolite RUB-18. The GCMS test results showed that the dominant compound in the methyl ester was methyl oleate (47.10%). The best conversion results were obtained at a temperature of 60oC with a reaction time of 120 minutes of 22.34%. This study followed the order of reaction of one.
