Abstract

Bioethanol is ethanol which is produced by glucose (sugar) fermentation using plant-based raw materials such as Raja Banana skin waste. This research applies the hydrolysis method and fermentation method. The hydrolysis method uses various types of acid catalysts that are able to convert carbohydrates into glucose while the fermentation method uses turbo yeast S.cerevisisae which functions to convert glucose into ethanol. This study aims to determine the best type of acid catalyst in producing bioethanol by hydrolysis process, this study also aims to determine the effect of fermentation time. Making bioerhanol from plantain skin begins with preparation of raw materials, then to the hydrolysis process by using various types of acid catalysts namely sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, citric acid, acetic acid, nitric acid according to the specified variable then proceed to the fermentation process where turbo is added yeast S. cerevisiae. The results of the analysis showed that the Sulfuric Acid catalyst was the best catalyst in the process of making bioethanol made from plantain banana skin because the sulfuric acid catalyst had the best fermentation at 84 and 96 hours fermentation time with 10% glucose content and 18% bioethanol content. Key words: Bioethanol; raja banana skin waste; hydrolysis; acid catalysts; fermentation
