Abstract

Motor vehicles are a source of air pollution with 70% of pollutants released through exhaust fumes. Exhaust smoke is emitted due to evaporation in the fuel system which can endanger human health and the environment. Especially carbon monoxide (CO) compounds, hydrocarbon compounds, nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SOx), and dust particles including lead (PB) which are released into the air. If these pollutants are contained in the air and inhaled too much by humans, it will cause harmful effects to health. Motorized rickshaws are motorized vehicles that add to air pollution with a high concentration of exhaust emissions. This study aims to see the ability of banana peels in reducing gas emissions, as well as utilizing banana peel waste. Banana peels will be carbonated and activated with H2SO4 in order to have a high absorption capacity and can be used as an adsorbent, as a medium for absorbing carbon monoxide (CO) exhaust gas emissions. This study uses variations in test time, namely 15, 30, 45 in minutes. From the research results obtained from the characteristics of the banana peel after activation has an absorption capacity of 31.3% and meets the Indonesian Industrial Standard No. 0258.88 is 20%. After being tested with a Gas Analyzer, the results of the decrease occurred in the 15th minute of sample B, namely exhaust with an adsorbent that could reduce CO up to 2% in idle conditions. Keywords : Kepok Banana Peel, Adsorbent, Carbon Monoxide Gas
