Abstract

The potential for decorative plant development is quite promising. Red shoots are one of the decorative plants that is becoming increasingly popular (Syzygium oleana). Red shoots are distinct in that their leaves have two colors: red on immature leaves and green as they mature. The issue with red shoot cultivation is that the leaves have a poor appearance due to diminished leaf quality and slow growing shoots as a result of inappropriate cultivation procedures such as pruning and fertilizing. Pruning red shoots is done to encourage the growth of new shoots and branches. MgSO4 fertilizer is one of the fertilizers required by red shoots because it contains Mg and S nutrients that function to build the formation of phytochemical compounds, namely red pigments or anthocyanins. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of the frequency of pruning and MgSO4 fertilizer used at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur from March to July 2021. The experiment employed a factorial Completely Randomized Design with three repetitions. The first factor is the frequency of pruning, which has three treatment levels: P0 = no pruning, P1 = pruning once, and P2 = pruning twice. Factor 2 MgSO4 fertilizer dosage is divided into five levels: M0 = no fertilization, M1 = 2 grams/plant, M2 = MgSO4 4 grams/plant, M3 = 6 grams/plant, M4 = 8 grams/plant. Experiment parameters include plant height, main stem diameter, leaf area, number of shoots, number of red leaves, number of green leaves, total of leaves. The findings revealed that: 1) there was no interaction between the treatment frequency of pruning and the dose of MgSO4 fertilizer; 2)treatment without pruning had the highest plant height value, and pruning treatment 1 time was the best treatment on leaf area parameters; and 3) the treatment dose of MgSO4 fertilizer had no significant effect on all parameters.
