Abstract

ABSTRACT During the current Covid-19 pandemic, the appearance of clothing is important when part of the face must be covered with a mask to adjust to new habits in accordance with health protocols. If the face cannot represent the whole body, then clothes can be an alternative. Various things can be done to build identity, one of which is through clothing. Masmundari's Damar Kurung painting has various themes, one of which Masmundari often paints is about women's activities. Studying Masmundari's Damar Kurung painting can be a way to understand how Javanese women try to build their own identity through clothing choices which then develop into a social and cultural identity. Clothing can be treated as a sign composed of markers and signifieds to form a certain meaning for the wearer, how are the symbols related to the identity of the wearer. Thus, this qualitative research with an interpretative descriptive approach uses Roland Barthes' semiotics to analyze the symbols in the Damar Kurung painting. The analysis was carried out based on three stages of analysis: image, written, and real clothing to obtain the relationship between clothing and the cultural identity of Javanese women. This study resulted in (1) Kemben, jarik with bund hair representing the Javanese identity of women in Gresik. (2) The influence of Islam from Sunan Giri helped build the identity of women who were Javanese and Islamic. That by wearing a veil or hijab, women do not lose their Javanese identity. Javanese women choose and wear certain clothes not only for biological needs but to achieve higher spiritual needs. Keywords Cultural Identity, Javanese Women, Damar Kurung 70
