Abstract

Tofu is one of favourite food because it is cheap and has high protein content, but its manufacture is conventional, making the tofu wastewater treatment not optimal. Whereas tofu wastewater is mostly consists of organic material with high BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand), high COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), and high of suspended solids called MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids). and if it is immediately discharged into a waterways it will pollute the environment. This research combines the facultative anaerobic biological treatment by growing up biofilms on roughing media in horizontal flow reactors. This combination is used to degrade high organic material in tofu wastewater such as BOD, COD, and MLSS. Carried out by seeding and acclimatization, each for 2 weeks. With the treatment of variations in roughing media types (gravel, bricks, charcoal, and mixtures), variations in flow rates (30 ml/min and 22.5 ml/min), and sampling times (8 hours, 16 hours, 24 hours, 32 hours , 40 hours and 48 hours). Obtained the results of the most effective type of roughing media for the reduction of BOD, COD, and MLSS in this processing are gravel media, with the smallest flow rates (22.5 ml/min), and the longest sampling time (48 hours) it will make contact between wastewater and the biofilm layer will be longer, so that the degradation process is maximized. Actually Gravel media with flow rates 22.5 ml/minute, and sampling time 48 hour can reduce 88.02% of BOD; 88.76% of COD, and 80.14% of MLSS.
