Abstract

The movie Joker, starred by Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips, in the making, contains a lot of violent scenes and adult material which includes in some personality disorder called antisocial personality disorder. The movie itself rated R which means this movie is Restricted for some age and requires parent or adult guardian because it contains some adult material, while in Indonesia there are some cases that teenager are still able to watch this movie without parental or adult guardian, that could cause bad influence for them. This study examines the reception or acceptance of antisocial personality disorder from teenage audience. In this study, the film Joker was chosen as the subject of research because it shows a lot of violence that categorized as antisocial personality disorder. In order to find the data, researcher use qualitative research based on reception analysis method, an encoding decoding model by Stuart Hall. The results show that there are diverse array of audience acceptance to the content of Joker based on their different backgrounds and specializations. Each informant focused on different message points in each scene and finally found that one informant were in a hegemonic-dominant position, one informant were in a negotiating position and two informants were in opposition position. This phenomenon exists as a result of the difference in the interpretative power from each of the informants. Keywords : reception analysis, film, antisocial personality disorder, joke
