Abstract

Most of the waste generated in the city of Surabaya is organic waste. One of the solution that can reduce organic waste is by managing waste in the compost houses. The Wonorejo compost house is one of the places that manages organic waste to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill. However, the process of reducing organic waste such as composting, BSF, and gasification also contribute to environment impact such as GHG emissions and water pollution. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research by analyzing the reduction of organic waste and the potential environmental impact at the Wonorejo Compost House by using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with the help of OpenLCA software to estimate the potential environmental impacts from the organic waste treatment in the compost houses. This study uses 4 different scenario models. The organic waste reduction percentage in the compost house in scenario 1, scenario 2, scenario 3, and scenario 4 consecutively are 70.82%, 70.82%, 71.33%, and 71.33%. The potential environmental impacts in the compost house from the largest to the smallest are global warming, eutrophication, photochemical oxidation, human toxicity, and acidification. The best management scenario to reduce the organic waste is scenario 4 by using composting, BSF and gasification. While the management scenario that produces the least impact is scenario 1, by using composting only.
